« Moving without muscles (walkers, jumpers, plants) » :
An increasing number of biologists, mechanicists and physicists recently started to collaborate about the basics of movement, at the individual or at the collective level, most often on systems from the plant world.
Physicists, mathematicians and mechanists usually focus on how to generate motion from simple physical principles, or on the emergence of collective effects in active populations. Biologists renew their approach of the living world, especially in nastic movements and tropism. Besides fundamental advances, and bioengineering that is a natural consequence of such research, all parts may be motivated by the applications Nature can inspire for what concerns the conception of synthetic systems, with breakthroughing possibilities of miniaturization (remote control, remote power sources etc).
The aim of this workshop is to exchange around this emerging field, from individual motion to collective behaviour, in order to help to the percolation of a research domain of common interest. In the spirit of the GDR MEPHY’s thematic days from which it is an emanation, it will be a fee-free meeting.

Invited Speaker: Pr Peter Fratzl (Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Postdam, Germany)
